This two-day IAP workshop will explore the aesthetic dimensions of microfluidics and biotechnology. It will focus on creating interactive artworks highlighting the intersection of science and art through microfluidic technologies, including various lab-on-a-chip devices. Participants will prototype works that explore the cultural and visual implications of lab automation and biotechnological advancements, highlighting their aesthetic significance.

ACT lecturer Matej Vakula and Dr. Mehdi Salek, the lead instructor for MIT’s New Engineering Education Transformation Program, will lead the workshop.

Wednesday, Jan 15:

  • 10 am-12 pm Introduction to microfluidics by Dr. Salek
  • 12 pm – 1 pm lunch break,
  • 1 pm – 1:15 pm Introduction to the IAP topic by Matej/Mehdi Intro
  • 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm First talk by invited speaker Albert Folch, microfluidics – scientific perspective, including (Q/A).
  • 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm Second talk by the invited speaker Albert Folch, microfluidics and art, including (Q/A);
  • 3:45-4:45 guest lecture on biomedia art and automation
  • 4:45 pm – 5 pm short brainstorming session

Thursday,  Jan 16:

  • 10-10:45 am Culture of Automation: lecture by Matej Vakula on art, data, and speculative design approach to microfluidic art.
  • 11-11:45 am How to: Short Autodesk fusion session.
  • 12-1 pm lunch break.
  • 1-2 pm: sketch/prototype speculative design.
  • 2-3 pm: teamwork.
  • 3-4 pm: At the end of the class, showcase/consult IAP students (Present conceptual idea).
